Dr. Lisa Thompson on Branding, MLSP, and Attraction Marketing
Dr. Lisa Thompson is a top leader in internet marketing, MLSP, and Blogging. Here is our exclusive interview on Attraction Marketing.
Wow, Lisa! I finally connected with you. I am honored to do this interview.
I find your story to be very inspiring and am excited to dive in deeper.
First off, I want to share with the readers here that you grew up with 50% hearing.
What were the disadvantages of this, but most importantly, what were the advantages? Most of our disabilities turn into our strengths. Did this impairment help you later on and how so?
GREAT question!
The big disadvantages were of course talking on the phone and being at large group events.
My phone anxiety was so bad that I would get physically sick if I ordered a pizza on the phone! It drove my college roommates and family crazy!
In a group environment, especially if it was noisy it made it next to impossible to hear.
To explain what my hearing is like, think of a raging surf pounding in your ears constantly. If people approach me from the sides or behind, I wouldn’t hear them.
There were times when I was teased in school at a young age when I didn’t hear something correctly and would laugh at me.
Back then I made the decision that accepting being stuck up was less painful than being laughed at. That was a limiting belief that held me back for a long time.
My hearing loss turned my disability into a strength when I threw myself into learning, especially writing. I began to learn how to communicate via writing, which is why I love blogging so much.
My hearing impairment led me to my career of being a speech language pathologist because I didn’t want anyone else to go through what I did.
Technology today with digital, wifi hearing aids, noise cancelling headphones, and the use of video/Skype/Zoom calls allow me to view my communication partner so I can read their lips and body language.
How old is your blog, how many posts do you have, and how has video helped your blog? I see that video is a main feature on your blog.
I launched this blog on 09/18/2016 using the MLSP Sites blogging platform. Currently, I have 387 posts, with 48,299 views and 6,205 comments.
Video is a HUGE help for my blog, especially now that I do Facebook Lives.
Video allows my viewers to bond with me and know that I am a real person. Video is nearly as good as face to face communication, and with Facebook Lives my subscribers can see how
I interact with people in real time.
How is the traffic to your blog and do you get leads consistently from your blog?
I average 8-10 leads consistently from my blog because I have 7 strategic call to actions placed within my blog. I primarily use Facebook Live and Twitter to drive traffic to my site.
Your husband was laid off in 2008 from his job and you had to find supplemental income. What opportunity did you find and did that help in supporting the household?
When my husband was initially laid off, I wasn’t actively “looking” for a network marketing company.
I was more into building a website and then adding affiliate products to that. I wound up learning how to build a blog using HTML and Dreamweaver.
I didn’t even know WordPress existed until I took a marketing course by Mike Filsaime and Chris Farrell. Once I was exposed to WordPress and Optimize Press I was hooked!
Unfortunately, I made no money the first few years because I saw it as a hobby. I just traveled around with my speech therapy practice all over MN.
As a matter of fact, I worked in my practice from December 1-December 23rd 2008 every single day straight to make income.
I can’t even tell you any memories from that Holiday Season. When you work for 23 days straight your brain turns to mush.
I also had no idea how to monetize and have a daily method of operating that made me focus on income producing activities.
How does the quote, “If we can, we must” tie into that last answer?
Tony Robbins says, “we don’t get our should but our MUSTS.” I always knew there was someone out there that would show me the right thing to do.
I knew I would be successful, I just needed to find a mentor who could compress my time and accelerate my learning curve.
What we focus on expands, and when we ask the right questions we got the right answer, and I found that answer when I met my mentors on May 5th, 2013.
You talk about the mastermind you had with Diane Hochman as being a breakthrough for you. What nuggets did you learn from Diane?
Diane taught me how to discover my voice and ROAR 1) Who am I 2) What do I stand for? 3) Who am I fighting for? And 4) Where am I going?
People are attracted to me and my message. She also taught me that my greatest struggle is the story that needs to be told.
My people are out there looking for me, and when I remain true to who I am and my message, I will rise above the noise and they will find me.
What do you feel was holding you back in your business, and what do you think holds the majority of marketers back from achieving their goals?
Wow…again, a great question! There were several things that held me back.
First, I was afraid to ask for help. This stemmed back from an incident when I was in the 2nd Grade where a nun crumpled up a piece of piece of paper, threw it into my face, and put me in the corner when I couldn’t follow a direction.
I was so afraid to tell my parents because I was afraid they would side with Sister than me. That asking for help subconsciously stayed with me since then. When working with Diane, she helped me overcome that limiting belief where I am not afraid to ask for help.
The second limiting belief I had was all I needed to do was attach my wagon to a leader and I would get recognition and success.
It only made me miserable. When I began to step out, share my story through video and blogging, I began to create waves others would ride on. I don’t settle for riding on the waves of leaders.
I paddle, paddle, paddle, kick, kick, kick to create a wave others will ride on. What gives me joy is now teaching others how to create their own waves. That’s how we will all make the world a better place.
I think what holds most marketers back is that they have fallen into a destructive “shiny object syndrome” – I fell into this cycle too. You think that success will happen as fast as you can download a song from iTunes. Not the case. Room wasn’t built in a day, and neither will be your business.
It takes time to build an audience on social media and on your blog. But, when you take the time to do it right and you know who your market is and how to solve their problem, you will have a loyal customers who will buy from you over and over again, not to mention having decreased attrition in your organization.
What’s your favorite product from MLSP and why?
MLSP has so many awesome products, but my absolute favorite is MLSP Sites, their blogging platform. It’s build on the WordPress platform and is the easiest, most secure, and fastest WordPress platform I ever used.
It comes loaded with the top of the line WordPress themes, and plugins all marketers need, not to mention it’s on enterprise hosting which makes it secure and fast.
My website has not crashed and loads within seconds. All plugins, themes, and WordPress updates are automatically updated so all you need to do is add your content!
They have the most comprehensive training tutorial in 2-3 minute HD video tutorials which walks you through WordPress, even if you’re a newbie and no tech experience.
If someone is new to MLM and wants to do everything through blogging, what would you tell them?
First I would tell people to identify what they want to be an expert in. Then research their market – and the biggest problems they have.
I would then tell them to get MLSP sites because they will get the training and support to help them build their blog correctly as well as creating the content that will attract their perfect prospect.
What’s your favorite social media platform right now and why?
There are two that I use consistently…I do Facebook Live Monday-Friday at 4:30 PM EDT on my personal page. I then upload my Facebook Live video to my YouTube channel and then to my blog.
I also use Twitter because it’s the ultimate sifting and sorting mechanism on social media. This is perfect for those who still work FT and have a busy family life after work.
Using just a few simple automated tools on Twitter you can sift and sort who are your perfect prospects are and then move them to Facebook to carry on the conversation.
What would be the quickest way to generate leads for free online?
You can go two ways….first, if you want to start building an audience FAST on social media to know, like, and trust you, do Facebook Live….it’s the ultimate rapport builder!
Do a 8-15 minute Facebook Live and have call to action at the end to direct them to your blog or email list…Just tell people to leave a comment if they want to opt in – make them ask for the link that way your Facebook Live video will have more of an organic reach.
Facebook frowns on having links in the Facebook live videos as they want people to not leave Facebook.
I would also recommend Twitter…when you use automated tools to set up your content, and to follow people you will be able to get leads and increase your followers in 15-20 minutes.
To learn more about how I use the automated tools, they can check out my blog posts as I have several blog posts that should you how to do just that.
What has been a little SEO trick that you’ve done on your blog that you think has paid off?
I will give you three because they’ve helped me out A LOT.
First, enable your WordPress comments and disable your Facebook comments. There are several reasons for this.
1) People will fill out the first comment box you see and Facebook is always listed first. Google gives your post more juice if they see engagement, and at the time of this interview they don’t recognize Facebook comments as engagement.
2) Your WordPress comments are also a source of leads for your business. When you fill out a WordPress comment you need to fill out 3 pieces of information – your name, email, and web address before you can submit a comment. That’s a targeted lead as you can get!
Second, include a picture of yourself and then link it to your Google Plus account. Linking to your Google Plus account will give you more juice by Google.
Third, include links from sites with high Domain Authority. For example, if I’m writing a blog post about a book on Tony Robbins, I will link to a Wikipedia bio on Tony. Wikipedia has very high domain authority and that will get recognized by Google.
Are you promoting just MLSP or do you have a network marketing business as well?
I joined MLSP on May 5th, 2013 and it was the best decision I ever made. I met my mentors and Diane Hochman there. It literally saved me personally and professionally.
I primarily promote MLSP because if it wasn’t for this community, tools, and training, I would still be struggling in my business today.
In addition to MLSP I promote several other affiliate programs, I have a coaching program, and I am involved in a network marketing company involved in the organic foods industry.
What are your goals for 2023?
My goals for 2017 are:
1) To generate $10,000/month income
2) To have 5-10 coaching clients per month
3) To speak on stage at my next company event
What’s your favorite business quote, and why?
My favorite business quote is from Robert Frost’s Poem “The Road Not Taken”….”two roads diverged in the wood and I – I took the one less traveled and that has made all the difference.”
You see, I could have made the choice of staying in my comfort zone and on the sidelines and “wishing” I was successful.
When I made the decision to step out of my comfort zone and take action by blogging and doing video, I have tripled my sales this year alone, met incredible people from throughout the world, made new friends, and I am now the leader everyone is looking for.
This is so powerful, Lisa! I got a lot of great insight from your tips.
