Michael Sean Mcdonald on MLM Recruiting on Instagram and Blogging
Michael Sean Mcdonald is a successful internet marketer, MLM blogger, and social media guru. Here’s our interview where we discuss his success secrets.
It’s been over a year since I spotlighted your blog on my 32 MLM Bloggers to Watch Dominate Network Marketing. A lot has changed since then, so let’s get to it!
How old is your blog, how many posts do you have, and are you still blogging today?
I would first like to say thank you for opportunity to share with your community, it is very humbling and an honor.
My blog is really only about 2 years old. I started to blog as one of my mentors said “Mike you should be putting out content on a blog.”
Since, he knew more than me, I went out and started to blog.
It’s taken a long time to get my blog to where it is today, in fact when I first started I never did any keyword research.
I just wanted content out there to share with others, and my first posts were well … not that great lol.
Since starting a couple of years ago, I actually just published my 292 post just the other day.
This is pretty cool, for a guy that did not really like to write is school. I guess I found my calling as it is a lot of fun and I find it to be a stress reliever.
Yes, I am still blogging today, when I first started out … and this will be a good tip for those starting out …
I blogged 3-5 times per week for the first 90 days. This allowed my audience to know that I was serious and help create a following.
After a while I started to blog 2-3 times per week and on certain days. Kept my target audience engaged as they knew when a post will be coming.
Being married to my lovely wife and 3 very active kids in all sorts of activities, I have scaled back to 1 post per week right now.
This was from some advice from a mentor of mine who went from 3 blog posts per week to testing on 1 per week.
For me the engagement has actually increased as it allows time for laser targeted promoting of the blog for that week.
How is the traffic to your blog, did you notice a spike in traffic at any particular milestone, and do you get leads consistently from your blog?
Traffic to my blog is good, I get about 1500-2000 views per month, it does spike depending on the promoting that I do for my blog.
When a milestone post comes out, I promote it as 200th blog post, or with the 300th coming up I will promote it in a special way.
My blog brings in leads every month, I use tracking on all my links in my blog posts therefore, I know where they are actually coming from, this also helps with future content.
Knowing what your audience is searching for is the key to creating content.
The content that gets a fair amount of traffic are the blog posts that I use for quotes.
I’ve done quotes from Brendon Burchard Quotes and Shark Tank Quotes people love to be inspired and quotes are one of the things that inspire your readers.
What on your blog seems to generate the most Leads for you?
What on my blog seems to generate the most leads … It is really funny but simple.
This kinda blew me away … here I am blogging and putting out this great content, having people leave amazing comments and the thing that gets me the most leads is … my Home page where I have a free training right under my header.
I get leads from a simple image, but the image has sharp colors that must be attracting people to click for the free training.
I was going to change it around but I have left is as it is doing work for me while I am out, sleeping, or even just doing my daily activities.
Getting an image is easy as anyone can create one using Canva.com, all I use is the free version. You can purchase images for a whole $1, but I usually find stuff that works.
Places that I promote my blog that help generate leads and this is really cool, as you can find content on what people are searching for Quara. This is a really good site and people use to find out answers and then go to your blog.
Besides generating leads from a simple my home page the blog post that generates the most leads and this is from Quora is my blog post on ‘How to remove ghost followers on Instagram’
And yes there is a blog post on how to use Quaro.com on my blog, it’s a great site and when you know how use it, traffic will come to your blog.
Are you promoting just MLM with your blog, or do you also promote an educational platform, such as My Lead System Pro, Elite Marketing Pro, or another Affiliate offer?
The way I use my blog is to provide value through tips, training’s that I have been to, or calls that I have been on.
I do promote an educational platform such as My Lead System Pro, as that is where I was taught about leading with value based content.
I don’t actually promote a MLM, once someone comes through a funnel (training), when they leave their number will get on a call and see how best I can serve their needs.
I use to promote MLM on my blog as well, but after speaking with a few people and studying some other blogs.
My mentor and I decided it was best to promote just training’s.
Each person has different wants and needs, on the discovery call that I do there are questions that I ask to find out what they are looking for, what their needs are and why.
It could be coaching, it could be they need a system to help them out with blogging, funnels, training, Customer relations manager, or maybe they are just looking at a MLM. It goes the way the person answers the questions.
I do have other affiliate offers on my blog, as I figure since I use the products and like them, might as well share with others.
If someone is new to MLM and wants to do everything through blogging, what would you tell them?
First thing we would do is define their attractive character (target customer). You have to market to the right audience.
Next, find a hosting company that is self hosted such as GoDaddy, or Sites (MLSP), and then get on WordPress.
When blogging, if you’re serious you must stay away from the free sites.
Why, many reasons such as speed, for example what happens when you get a lot of stuff on your computer, it will slow down.
Using a free blogging platform and having millions on this platform will affect your blogs performance. Search engines love sites that load fast.
Then we would set up a game plan for how many times the person could blog.
We would do our research on what their target market is looking for and add that to the game plan.
Go over basic keyword research and what numbers to look for are targets to hit.
Once that is all complete we would go over types of blog post to use, some with video some without.
Video is great but if you do the same thing all the time people will get bored and you want to have it feel fresh every time.
And finally, we would put together a promotion plan for the blog posts, promotion with the blog can be free or paid. Since they’re starting out we would work on free promotions.
I noticed that you have quite a following on Instagram with over 17,000 followers. I know that’s difficult to achieve. How did you gain a good following like that on instagram?
Yes, 17K in followers took a lot of time to get to that point.
I spent mostly about 8 months everyday on Ig to build it up so that there would be followers that were in my niche.
I never bought any followers, it was just good old grind it out.
Follow a certain amount of people per day, then leave real comments on their images and then they would follow back.
If people did not follow back then I would unfollow, with only being allowed to follow 7500 you have to make sure that you are unfollowing people who are not following back.
After a while once people see you provide great value with your content they just come and follow you even if you can’t follow back.
Build a good following and engage with others even if you don’t follow back you can go to their profile and comment on they images and send a Direct message. Invite them over to Facebook and have a friend over there.
Hopefully that was a good answer, it should help people with Instagram, you have to be consistent, your followers want to see if your serious and will be around for the long haul.
What’s your favorite social media platform right now and why?
Right now, my favorite social media platform is Facebook.
The reason is 1.7 Billion users, talk about people everywhere that you can meet.
Now, with Facebook you have to know where you target audience will be hanging out and then start to see how things are going.
Treat people on Facebook as people you’d meet on the street, in a meet up group, or at your kids soccer game.
It’s called social media because it is meant to be social, not be weird. You have to remember that on the other side of the keyboard is a person, just have a conversation.
Facebook has made the very easy through Messaging, voice messages, and the call feature.
I do have a presence on most of the other social media platforms, but I am mostly doing active prospecting on Facebook and my blog is doing the passive marketing.
People will want to know about you, so when you have a blog they find out more about what you’re all about, then they can choose to opt in to some training.
I’m fascinated by your “Wake Up Call” section of your blog. How long have you done that and what do you talk about?
The ‘Wake up Call’ is part of the community that I belong to, so it is not mine. It has been going on since 2008 and is really all about getting the mind right.
One of the biggest struggles most people face when they start with a MLM, affiliate marketing, or any home base business is realizing that they are now the owner.
You will only get paid by helping people solve their problems. It’s not punch in at 9 and leave at 5 and get paid 2 weeks later.
The work you do today, you might get paid in 2 weeks, 3 months, or even 1 year later. It will depend on when the person you’re speaking with is ready.
The ‘Wake up call’ has helped me out a lot and for those that cannot listen the replays are on iTunes.
What are your goals for 2017?
Wow, 2017 is coming … crazy. I have already been planning for 2017 and the goals are:
Business:
Help 100 families start their own home based business and teach them to market online.
Continue to grow my business to the next levels.
I spoke on stage last year at an Optometrist convention, so get some more speaking engagements.
Personal:
My family will be going on a holiday to the Cayman Island
Increase my donations to our favorite charities.
Start looking for our dream home in our city.
Continue to enjoy the life my wife and I have with our three kids.
What’s your favorite business quote, and why?
“If you can’t influence people, then they will not follow you. And if people won’t follow, you are not a leader. That’s the Law of Influence.” John C. Maxwell
~The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C. Maxwell
